Recycling or reusing toilet paper tubes is a great way to make your home more sustainable – as well as being fun for all the family. I was lost in your pages and smelt smoke and had totally forgotten about the oil I had on the stove which was smoking nicely. It allows you to test your seeds’ quality before you commit to potting them up – you’ll only need to pot up the ones that germinate. As a result of this I have switched to using the inside tubes of kitchen rolls which are pure cardboard with no coating on the inside. I only really squared them as it made it easier to create bottom flaps but many people have commented on the usefulness of squaring them up.Keeping your child entertained at home all day can be a difficult task for any parent, especially on a budget. Creatures such as slugs, moths and worms can all reduce your seedlings’ chances of survival, so why not use your toilet paper tubes to make defenses. WIDE RANGE OF USES: These cardboard rolls can be cut, glued, painted and more to create different designs.

It also means that compost falls in between the rolls when trying to fill them up which ends in a generally messy situation. My question is how come these toilet tubes are supposedly bio-degradable but part of the manufacturing process includes plastic, which has now contaminated my soil! Since we’re on the subject of seed libraries this weekend I thought I’d share this post from sharpenyourspades as it’s rather timely in regards to what to do once your check out some new seeds from the library.

Whether your seedlings are planted out in your garden or in pots indoors, there are many pests and insects that can affect whether or not they thrive. Just cut the tubes to an appropriate size and fit them around your seedlings to make it harder for those pesky creatures to get to them. Place the ends of the kitchen roll tube inside each hole in the paper cups, with the slot facing up. If you want them to compost down quicker, tear them into smaller pieces or soak them in water before you add them. They cling to each other, so I just grab one and it rolls off leaving the next one available for the next time.Personalised advertising may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of information under California and other state privacy laws, and you may have a right to opt out. This weekend i dug up some of my prized veg and was absolutely horrified to find that the cardboard tubes had degraded into the soil OK, BUT they had left a plastic layer around where the tube once were. You can recycle the cardboard in your domestic recycling bin – but what if you could actually use those inner tubes and last scraps of paper in your garden?
